Liberty Square Timisoara
With an estimated population of around 300,000 inhabitants Timişoara is the main economic and cultural center in Banat, in the western part of Romania and its third largest city.

 

Recommended sightseeing/ main attractions:
The city center largely consists of buildings from the Austro-Hungarian era but in the old city several historic areas can be found. Those are Cetate (Belváros in Hungarian, Innere Stadt in German), Iosefin (Józsefváros, Josephstadt), Elisabetin (Erzsébetváros, Elisabethstadt) and Fabric (Gyárváros, Fabrikstadt). Numerous bars, clubs and restaurants have opened in the old Baroque square (Unirii Square).

Timişoara Orthodox Cathedral (Catedrala Ortodoxă)
built between 1937 and 1940 it was dedicated to the Three Holy Hierarchs, Saints Basil the Great, Gregory the Theologian, and John Chrysostom. It has 11 towers, of which the central and the highest has a height of 96 meters. 

St. George's Cathedral
The cathedral's foundation stone was put on 6th of August 1736. It was designed by Austrian

architects and finished by two architects from Timişoara in 1774. The Dome was built in Austrian baroque style and is dedicated to Saint George, the dioceses patron saint. 

Huniade Castle (Castelul Huniazilor)
the castle is the oldest monument of Timişoara, built between 1443 and 1447 by John Hunyadi over the old royal castle dating from the 14th century (built during the reign of Charles of Anjou). It currently houses the History Section and the Natural Sciencies Section of the Banat Museum.

By plane:
Traian Vuia airport, the countrie's secon d busiest offers flights to more than 30 destinations in 10 European countires. The airport is located in the north eastern part of Timişoara, at a 12 km distance from the city centre, near Ghiroda village. The RATT Express 4 (E4) connects the terminal to Timişoara city centre.

By train:
Timişoara is a major railway centre and is connected to all other major Romanian cities as well as European cities like Belgrade and Budapest, through the national CFR network.

By car:
Timisoara is not connected to a major highway. The distance to Szeged in Hungary is 130km and Belgrade is only 160km away. From there highway connections lead southwards and westwards. The Romanian capital Bucharest is more than 500km from Timisoara.
